Questions for Essential Oil Usage FAQ’s

1. I’m new to essential oils. How are they used? – Each bottle of Young Living essential

oil is labeled with directions for how that oil can be used, and these directions vary

based on location. Please consult with the product label for appropriate use

directions.

2. I see the term “carrier oil” used in several places. What is a carrier oil, what does it 

do, and why should I use it? – A carrier oil is a vegetable oil such as coconut oil or

grapeseed oil that can be used to dilute EO. YL V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex is an

excellent carrier oil for all applications. Carrier oils ensure that EOs applied topically

are comfortable. Dilution with a carrier oil does not dilute the effect of the EO, and

prevents waste due to excessive application. Vegetable shortening, butter, margarine

or petroleum derivatives (petrolatum jelly) should never be used as carrier oils. Some

consumers choose to avoid olive oil as a carrier oil because of its strong aroma and

thick viscosity.

3. What is a hot oil? – “Hot oils” are oils that, when applied to the skin, can cause a hot

or burning sensation. YL recommends using a patch test procedure prior to first use.

To perform a patch test, apply 1-2 drops of EO to a patch of skin such as the forearm.

Observe that area of skin over the course of 1-2 hours for any noticeable reaction;

usually reactions occur within 5-10 minutes. If you experience a hot or burning

sensation or if you develop a rash, add V-6 carrier oil to the affected area as often as

needed. Examples of “hot” oils include cinnamon, clove, lemongrass, peppermint,

oregano, thyme, Exodus II, and Thieves.

4. What if I experience skin discomfort or irritation? – If discomfort or irritation occurs,

stop using the EO, and apply V-6 or other carrier oil to the affected area. Never use

water in an attempt to flush the oil off the skin, as this may increase discomfort. If a

rash occurs this may be a sign of detoxification; drink adequate water to encourage

the release and removal of body toxins. Toxins present in petrochemical based soaps

and skin care products, detergents and perfumes may trigger some of the

detoxification reactions. Consider discontinuation of these agents if a reaction

occurs. Before using the EO again, perform a patch test (see above) and dilute with

carrier oil as needed. Water drives oil into the skin and the eyes. If EO gets in your

eye, flush with V-6 carrier oil to alleviate any discomfort. Discomfort should be

alleviated within minutes. If eye discomfort does not subside within 5 minutes,

please seek medical attention. Be aware that some documents suggest diluting the

oil with water. YL suggests that you dilute with carrier oil to ensure that discomfort is

alleviated as quickly as possible.

5. Can essential oils be applied to sensitive areas? – YL recommends that you avoid

contact with EOs and sensitive areas such as eyes, ears, genitals and mucous

membranes. If you choose to use the oil in any sensitive area, dilute 1 drop of the

essential oil to 5-10 drops of V-6 carrier oil.

6. How often can essential oils be applied? How much do I use? – Proper usage is

indicated on each EO label. Please follow label instructions. The idea of “if a little is

good, a lot is better” is not always correct. Essential oils are very potent and

powerful– start low and go slow. In most cases 1-2 drops are adequate and using

more may waste product. Depending on the EO you can gradually build up to 3-4

uses per day if desired. Excessive use of essential oils may increase the risk for

adverse reactions.

7. Can essential oils be used during pregnancy or while nursing? – As with any medical

condition it is strongly recommended that, prior to use of essential oils, you seek the

advice and recommendation of a competent, trained health care advisor who is

experienced in EO usage. It is generally recommended to avoid overuse and

excessive use of Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea), Sage (Salvia officinalis), Tansy (Tanacetum

vulgare), Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), and Wintergreen

(Gaultheria procumbens) as well as the blends and supplements that contain these

oils.

8. Can essential oils be used on children? – Many EOs are appropriate for use with

children, and they should be diluted prior to use. Some YL products are pre-diluted

with carrier oil as indicated on product label and are intended for direct application

on children. Children generally respond well to EO, and use of a carrier oil is

recommended. One-2 drops of EO such as SleepyIze, RutaVala, Gentle Baby and

Peace & Calming may be diluted in carrier oil and applied to the bottom of the feet.

9. How does exposure to sun affect essential oil use? – Some EOs, especially citrus oils,

contain natural molecules that react with sunlight (UV light) and cause a sensitivity

reaction. All YL EOs and oil blends that contain these compounds are labeled with a

warning to avoid sun/UV light for 12 to 48 hours after applying. Caution should

always be used when starting to use a new oil: use patch testing (see above), dilute

and apply the oil to skin that is protected from sun/UV exposure to reduce the risk of

sensitivity. YL beauty and cosmetic products are formulated to remove sun-sensitizing

agents to reduce the risk of sun sensitivity.

10. What about the use of essential oils if I have a medical condition? Can essential oils

interact with prescription medications? – If you have a disease or medical condition,

or if you are using a prescription medication, it is recommended that you consult with

a health advisor who has experience with EOs prior to using an EO. Seek the advice of

the prescribing physician and a pharmacist about potential interactions between the

medication(s) and the essential oil(s).

Living With Fibromyalgia: Doesn’t Mean We Have To Give Up Our Dreams

Hello World!

I am a middle-aged woman who is one among many people in the world living with Fibromyalgia. After I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in November 2015, I thought my dreams of living a normal life were over since this was yet another condition that had no cure just treatment. The only thing I knew about fibro at the time was that it was the reason why I suffered with pain, stiff joints from head to toe every day and felt exhausted even after taking naps.

My New Purpose

I had given up some dreams such as making awesome home improvements, re-learning horseback riding and any others that involved a lot of physical exertion so, I could focus on getting treatment for it. On the other hand, there were other goals I was able to keep. In this post, I want to tell everyone who deals with painful flares, fatigue and other symptoms that living with Fibromyalgia doesn’t mean we have to give up our dreams. I am going to be sharing my life’s first lesson about what I went through in the beginning of my new life with Fibromyalgia in hopes it may help others who new to this.

Not all plans go the way we want but…

I wanted to work until my husband retires then move to the southwest area of the country for the warmer climate where I could make a living as a semi-retired writer in my own home business. Even after I got the fibromyalgia diagnosis, I tried to continue working at my dream job to help save up the money to buy a smaller home in which ever state we decide to move to.

All through the winter and spring of 2016, I had fiery fibro flare episodes in my shoulders almost every day plus every joint in my body ached and was stiff to the point where I needed a wheelchair to get around the office. I also had severe fatigue that made it very difficult to concentrate worse, I was caught dozing off at my desk by other co-workers. I informed my supervisors about the illness after I was diagnosed and, they were very supportive even to the point where they allowed me to work at home a day or two every week but that changed late spring.

I tried! I really really tried!

Do what you love

There was a saying known as, “Beware the ides of March,” Like Caesar, it was a warning for me too. I was called into my supervisor’s office and told my work quality and performance was slipping. He knew it was because of the Fibro but something had to be done. Since I needed to see my doctors for other illnesses as well as the Fibromyalgia and try to go for physical therapy for neck and low back pain, I decided to take short term disability, then it turned into long term disability in the fall of 2016.

Towards the end of my long-term disability period, I wish I could have had Dr. Who as my doctor, because I knew he would have fixed everything with his sonic screwdriver but, that wasn’t reality? I went to see my Primary Care Doctor at the end of May 2017 he gave me his prognosis and it wasn’t good. He explained to me that Fibromyalgia was yet another illness that had no cure. In addition to that, I had arthritis in the low back out of control diabetes and stress issues.

The End Is Near!

The doctor stated that modern medicine had done all it could for me and with everything I was dealing with at the time, he also said I really needed to focus on getting control of the Diabetes which had to take precedence over everything else that was going on and, it was urgent. For years, my doctor suggested I cut back on my work schedule but this time he said my health was more important and that I should stop working and get disability or do a medical retirement.

Quit or retire due to medical issues, really?! That is what my PCP said and I wouldn’t admit it to him or anybody else but in my heart, I already knew I should take his advice. I wanted to keep working full time until age 70 then retire. In fact, I fought tooth and nail like a bear trapped Wolverine to keep going but, I knew It was time to end the fight. Everything my doctor said really sunk in this time, I was just too tired to fight. It was then I told him He was right. It was time for me to stop hurting myself.

I was only a few days away from the end of my long-term disability period. I applied for permanent disability but didn’t qualify for it, when I the company I worked for offered me a deal where I retire from the company but If I can get my health issues under control, I could be hired back probably in a different position. Well I officially called it quits in November 2018. There was no party or anything. I was out of the office for almost a year and the only thing I had to do was go to the office, collect my boxed-up items and turned in my badge. After working for more than thirty years that was it.

When An Old Dream Dies, God Gives Us A New Dream…

The first month of retirement was the toughest. Yes! I went through the normal feelings of anger, depression and crying spells because I felt like I blew it for me and for my husband but the nice thing was that I already had a home business I worked on part-time. Well, I decided to put more work and time in it. I got four clients doing work for them as a data analyst, and Internet researcher. I also got clients as an administrative assistant all through Upwork.

It felt great being my own boss, my work schedule was very flexible and the money wasn’t bad either. Then it dawned on me! The dream wasn’t over! I could still work but I learned to do things differently. The lesson I shared with anyone who is disabled because of Fibromyalgia is this; when we find ourselves unable to do things like we used to, we can learn to adapt! We can work around the pain and disabilities.

Fibromyalgia Won’t Be A Dream Killer…

To this day I am still working on the acceptance part, but with God’s help, I believe there is still plenty He has for me to do to help people, and with the help of my counselor, I learned my dreams weren’t over; I just had to accept my new limits. I also rediscovered my first dream of being a writer. Actually, I wanted to be a writer when I was younger but had to put it down when I needed to earn real money so I could go back to school.

We Keep going no matter what

Finally, I used my story to let people who also suffer with Fibromyalgia know that life doesn’t end with the diagnosis. It’s not an easy thing to go through. I spent and still spend most of my time close to a comfortable chair or bed with my laptop but, that’s the nature of the beast for me; at least there are natural and not so natural medication, and treatments available for it. In fact, many people with disabilities learn to adapt and won’t allow anything stand in their way to live a good productive life. Fibromyalgia is no different. Living with Fibromyalgia doesn’t mean we have to give up our dreams, we just learn to create new ones. If we can go through the pain and fatigue fibro brings, then we can learn to work around it.

   Hello and welcome to my webpage! First, I want to thank my Wealthy Affiliate family for their support in the creation of my first official blog! Now, I have to admit that am quite new to putting my thoughts on something electronic which is a big step for me. In fact, before I created this blog, I did my journaling on paper which at the time was the best way for me to write my thoughts and feelings about things down for years. Now, writing on paper hurts my hands at times and it’s my goal to write more in hopes that it will become a second career; I think writing in my website is much less painful for me and, I can reach out to more people writing this way.

My Story 

   I was an independent go getter all of my life and, of course, there were a lot of rough spots to overcome after high school. I was accepted to Wayne State University which took 29 years for me to graduate. It took that long because I needed to work and take care of my parents. Life interrupts but, I didn’t setbacks stop me. I took a couple of classes here and there because I still had the dream to graduate someday and I did; first with the associates in liberal arts at Oakland Community College in 2010 then the bachelor of science degree from Wayne State University in 2014.

    During that time, I worked as a pharmacy technician for 31 years and, I loved my job. I enjoyed helping the patients and It felt good seeing the ill get well or at least in a position where they got what they needed to maintain whatever medical conditions they were dealing with. However; I was on my feet a lot and it was pretty hard on my knees and back but to me it was just one of those things that came with the job. Over time, the backaches got worse and, I had excellent doctors who treated me with anti-inflamatories, physical therapy, steroid injections, and radiofrequency ablations. I had planned on working until I reached 70 and just semi-retire to do other things like painting landscapes and write but things didn’t turn out that way.

   I was diagnosed with having mild arthritis at the end of 2013 which slowed me down but it didn’t stop me, not even on days when I had the hardest times walking from point A to point B. First, I walked with a cane, then the walker, then I needed a wheelchair. I also wore various kinds of back and knee braces and used every over the counter pain rubs in existence.

On top of that, I had problems do the fun stuff I used to do because of the pain issues, plus I had major fatigue. I struggled to get through the eight hour work day and needed someone to walk me to my car. After years of seeing every type of doctor imaginable, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in November 2016 and that was it the straw that broke the camel’s back. Because of the pain and constant fatigue, I had no choice but to give up my dream job which was heartbreaking. Even now, I still have off and on battles accepting my new situation but now, I’m free to write the next chapter of my story.

My New Mission

   I have dealt with other medical conditions over the years such as asthma and type 2 diabetes but dealing with chronic pain from arthritis and Fibromyalgia along with the other issues that came with them as I get older was been a huge challenge for me. I’ve had so many trips through the medical system and at the same time the pain and fatigue made it impossible for me to work and concentrate so I decided to retire early as medically disabled  in June of 2017.

    My head still spins over everything I learned in regards to taking better care of myself with the medications I have to take. I am also learning about the latest in exercise and nutrition through Integrative Medicine. What I want to do is help people avoid some of the drama I went through what by sharing what I learned from the treatments, both conventional and holistic treatments I received for pain. If I can do this for someone who just discovered they have Fibromyalgia and don’t know what to do and need advice from other people who live with the debilitating Fibromyalgia symptoms, then I know I’ve found my second calling.

The Goals for This Blog

   The goal of this blog is to share Fibromyalgia information, health tips, gentle exercise tips, and essential oil information because, I’m a believer in using natural oils, foods, herbs and spices to help with pain management so, I can cut back on man made drugs which have a tendency to have a lot of side effects.

 In learning how to take better care of myself, I also want to help people who suffer from chronic pain ailments such as Fibromyalgia and other related conditions. I learned a great deal from my experiences of having to live with this condition through many trips to various medical professionals and, the information I share is not to replace your treatment from your own physicians. I just want to help spread the word on how the medical community is treating people who live with the symptoms of Fibromyalgia. Finally, I hope to learn things from you as well and will pick some of your tips to publish with you as the star.
